A Proclamation for a HouckDesign Disc Golf Course in Louisiana

What an honor for us to be a part of this first-of-its-kind Proclamation now noted in Jefferson Parish, New Orleans, Louisianna.

The Proclamation stated how disc golf has benefited Jefferson Parish and listed some of HouckDesign's achievements.

The existing course design at Parc des Familles was started in 2015 and completed in 2017. That course will be upgraded as it has lost some trees, and the course needs a redesign in some areas to accommodate higher level tournaments. A lot has changed in the game and in disc golf course design during the past ten years. For instance, accommodating spectators was something no designer was thinking about in 2015, but now thousands come to watch the action in person.

The disc golf course at Parc des Familles is ranked by players as one of the top 100 courses in the world for the past 6 years. This is due to the complex design which creates much variety, balance, character, and strategy for the players. The parks and recreation did a great job on the execution of the design and the build. When we have both a great design and a great build, it's the secret to success. Councilwoman-at-large, Jennifer Van Vrancken, attended the 3DISCgolf course design conference earlier this year in January where she saw and heard what was being taught to designers when it comes to design/build. She recognized how much is considered in the design, how much now goes into building a more sustainable course. It's time for more cities, township, parish and counties, etc. to recognize the impact of quality courses and premier Championship courses in their park.

Even state parks and national parks are great places to offer recreational and championship disc golf course designs due to the sport's popularity which has consistently grown in the past 20 years. By one estimate around 6-7% of the population plays disc golf or has played disc golf at some point. That percentage is expected to keep growing as more and more people pick up the disc on their own and learn how to play from YouTube videos, or from a friend. The demand for recreational courses is also high for this same reason.

Thanks to Jefferson Parish, hopefully, more communities will consider the positive impact disc golf has had on its economy and the good health of its residents.
